THE FIRST CHRISTIANS 

"The Christians know and trust God. They placate those who oppress them and make them their friends; they do good to their enemies. Their wives are absolutely pure, and their daughters modest. Their men abstain from unlawful marriage and are free from all impurity: If any of them have bondwomen or children, they persuade them to become Christians for the love they have toward them; and when they become so, they call them without distinction brothers. They love one another. They do not refuse to help the widows. They rescue the orphan from him who does him violence. He who has, gives ungrudgingly to him who has not.

Is secular “psychotherapy” compatible with the principles and the anthropology of the Orthodox Church?

 

An interview with Dr Jean Claude Larchet(*), University Professor who holds a doctorate in the Humanities, has studied Psychopathology, Philosophy and the Eastern Church Fathers and has also had clinical experience in psychiatric hospitals.
 
This is a transcribed excerpt from “Radio-Paraga”, a program in the official radio station of the Church of Greece. It was broadcast on Sunday, 6 February 2000, under the title: “Is Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy a Science?”. The program was presented by father Konstantinos Stratigopoulos.  
 
Fr K.S.: Thank you for being with us tonight. The subject of our broadcast is psychotherapy according to the Eastern Church Fathers versus secular “psychotherapy”. Since you are an expert in this field, we would like to ask you a few questions. In your opinion, is secular “psychotherapy” compatible with the principles and the anthropology of the Orthodox Church?

A married man who had children, servants and plenty of wealth, was very merciful and hospitable. One evening after dinner, he slept and in the morning he was found lying on the ground, cold and unconscious as if dead. His relatives carried him to his bed giving him first aid and warming him to bring him back to consciousness. After many days, he recovered and was asked by his relatives to tell them what happened to him and where he was while he was as dead for so many days. He did not respond, only crying inconsolably and without ceasing and until his death he told nobody. When he was approaching his end he called his eldest son and told him this in front of everybody.

Are the Heterodox Members of the Church?

Firstly, it is necessary to clarify that as Orthodox Christians we believe, in agreement with the Symbol of Faith (the Creed) of Nicene-Constantinople (381 AD), “in One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church”. According to the unbroken dogmatic consciousness of the Orthodox Church throughout the ages, i.e., according to her self-consciousness, this One Church is the Orthodox Church. 

The confession of the Symbol that the Church is “One” means that this is the basic attribute of her self-identity. In practical terms this means that the Church is not able to be divided – to be split apart – because this is the Mystical Body of Christ. Christ as the Head of the Body of the Church is neither able to have many bodies, nor to possess a divided one. In the Body of Christ even death itself is defeated.

Εύκολα ευκολότατα ο Χριστός μπορεί να μας δώσει ό,τι επιθυμούμε. Και κοιτάξτε το μυστικό. Το μυστικό είναι να μην το έχετε στο νου σας καθόλου να ζητήσετε το συγκεκριμένο πράγμα. Το μυστικό είναι

         να ζητάτε την ένωσή σας με τον Χριστό ανιδιοτελώς, χωρίς να λέτε, «δώσ’ μου τούτο, εκείνο …». Είναι αρκετό να λέμε, «Κύριε Ιησού ελέησόν με».

Δεν χρειάζεται ο Θεός ενημέρωση για τις διάφορες ανάγκες μας. Εκείνος τα γνωρίζει όλα ασυγκρίτως καλύτερα από μας και μας παρέχει την αγάπη Του. Το θέμα είναι ν’ ανταποκριθούμε σ’ αυτή την αγάπη με την προσευχή και την τήρηση των εντολών Του. Να ζητάμε να γίνει το θέλημα του Θεού· αυτό είναι το πιο συμφέρον το πιο ασφαλές για μας και για όσους προσευχόμαστε. Ο Χριστός θα μας τα δώσει όλα πλούσια. Όταν υπάρχει έστω και λίγος εγωισμός δεν γίνεται τίποτα. Όταν έχομε με τον Χριστό σχέση απολύτου εμπιστοσύνης, είμαστε ευτυχισμένοι, έχομε χαρά. Έχομε τη χαρά του Παραδείσου. Αυτό είναι το μυστικό. …

“Μὲ ἐρωτᾶτε, παιδιά µου, ποιὸς δρόµος ὁδηγεῖ στὸν Χριστό. Θὰ σᾶς ἔλεγα νὰ ἀκολουθήσετε ἕνα πολὺ σύντοµο µονοπάτι, αὐτὸ τῆς Ταπεινώσεως. Καὶ θὰ µ’ ἐρωτήσετε, πῶς θὰ περιπατήσουµε Γέροντα, σ’ αὐτὸ τὸ µονοπάτι; Σᾶς λέγω, λοιπόν, αὐτὸ τὸ µονοπάτι τὸ βάδισε πρῶτα ὁ Χριστός µας καὶ µετὰ οἱ Ἅγιοι. Ὁ Χριστός µας τὸ λέγει καθαρά. Ἀκολουθῆστε µε στὰ ἴχνη µου. Μᾶς χάραξε τὸ δρόµο, παιδιά µου, µᾶς δίδαξε καὶ τὸν τρόπο.

Ἔκανε στενὸ τὸ δρόµο, µονοπάτι. Μόλις ἕνας χωράει νὰ περπατεῖ. Εἶναι στενός, δύσκολος, ἀνηφορικός. Ἡ πόρτα γιὰ νὰ µπεῖς, στενὴ καὶ χαµηλή• πρέπει νὰ σκύψεις γιὰ νὰ περάσεις!

Νὰ σκύψεις µὲ ὑποµονὴ στὶς δυσκολίες τῆς ζωῆς. Νὰ σκύψεις µὲ πίστι καὶ προσευχὴ στὶς ἀσθένειες. Νὰ σκύψεις, ζητῶντας τὴν θεία βοήθεια σὲ ὅλα ὅσα σοῦ συµβαίνουν. Νὰ σκύψεις στὶς ὕβρεις, στὶς κατηγορίες καὶ στὶς συκοφαντίες.
